Platform Key after failed BIOS update

0

Hi,

I've upgraded my hard drive to a new SSD and started to build a completely new system from scratch.

After the OS has been successfully installed I've installed the HP Support Assistant to be able to identeify

my hardware on the drivers page.

Among the suggested driver and software updates there was a BIOS update too so I've decided to install

that also.

The BIOS update took a few minutes then after a few restarts the update screen appeared again saying

"BIOS recovery" (I guess something went wrong but given that there were no error messages I don't know what).

After the recovery process and a few restarts the OS booted normally and everything is fine except some

weird changes in the BIOS.

One thing is that every BIOS settings has been resetted to the defaults (ok, I understand and I can live with that Smiley Happy ),

but the secure boot option is disabled (not just it is set to 'disabled' but the option itself is black so I can't change it)

and the Platform Key is now 'not enrolled' (I understand that without the platform key secure boot is not possible,

so the main issue is this missing platform key).

I have two questions regarding this:

- can the platform key be replaced/restored somehow?

- does it effect a Windows 8/8.1 install or only the secure boot? (during the installation process the OS didn't ask for an OS licence because it is stored somewhere in the BIOS but does the error above has some effect on this? Is it possible that the OS licence key is gone too?)

I would appreciate any help on this topic.

Power on, screen black, caps lock flashing

This is my father's laptop, so I'm trying to help. When the power is turned on, it seems to truly have power. The power light is lit, the WiFi light is on, however the screen remains black. The caps lock button is slowing flashing for about one second and goes back out. I've never owned a HP before so I am unsure if this is some sort of code or what the reason for the black screen is. If anyone could offer some guidance, I would greatly appreciate it.

International Warranty Coverage in US

Fellas,

I am having some hardware problem in HP Envy 15 Touchsmart laptop. I bought this laptop in India with international warranty and care packs and other non sense what HP told.

Currenlty I stay in US. In regard, when I tried to contact customer support in US, they want me to get support from India. That doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know Hp behaves in such way. If they want to contact HP india, why is that called HP international warranty and comes with a premium price.  I am now stranded and can't use my laptop.

Any one faced similar problme? Please help.

IN ANY CASE, NO HP AGAIN. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Thanks

Reassigning functions from F keys

Hello. I would like to remove the standard functions from my F keys, so that I can actually use them, but I want to keep some prebuilt functions as well. Is there any way to move functions, like the volume up/down, to something else, such as alt+F key or maybe something on the numpad?

Upgraded HDD to 2TB primary and secondary HDDs report partitions as RAW or unformated

I am having great difficulty in successfully cloning my 1TB (MBR) HDDs (2 HDDs, 1st HDD has 3 primary partitions w/WinVista OS and the secondary No2 HDD has 2 primary partitons, for storage) to 2 new/larger 2TB Seagate(Samsung) HDDs also initially formated MBR.  Both primary and secondary HDDs are mounted inside the laptop's two HDD bays. The older two 1TB HDDs are in good working order.

The new two 2TB HDDs (after cloning from the older two 1TB "source" HDDS) and is installed into the DV9000 and then booted up and running in the WinVista OS environment.  Opening My Computer and in Disk Mangement ONLY show the very first partition of each HDD with a working /accessable primary NTFS(MBR) partition (1st HDD, first partition as drv."C", contains the bootable OS, the partitionsfor drv."D" and drv."R" are either missing/not reported or are reported as "RAW" or unformated.  2nd HDD, fist partition as dvr."E" is reported as a valid primary NTFS(MBR) partition and is accessable with its correct data content inside the partition.  The second partition of the secondary HDD is either missing/not reported or is reported as "RAW" or unformated.

The actual cloning process (with EZgig IV and other similar cloning apps)  always seems to work and the program's completion indicates a successful clone was acheived (without errors or other issues).   The newly cloned HDDs are appropriately and correctly recognized by the HP DV9000 (and other computers) when thay are attached via a USB type HDD caddie and USB cable to a USB port on either of the these computers.  The OSs on these different computers makes NO difference here as the cloned HDDs show all partitions as NTFS (MBR) at the correct cloned size and all content within the partions appear to be there and accessable. Again when these cloned 2TB HDDs are attached via USB port WinXP, WinVista and Win7 all see the newly cloned 2TB HDDs as correctly partitioned and with accessable content/data inside the partitions.

The unsloved problem/issue is that when these brand new 2 TB (MBR) cloned HDDs are appropriately mount into their respective HDD bays in the DV9000, only the first (typically ~1TB) partitions are being recognized by the DV9000's OS (Windows Vista, 32bit) the remaining partitons listed after the first partition on each HDD is shown as a "RAW" partition, any attempts to access or repair this condition via the windows disk management or daignostic facilties only leads to a question of reformating the HDD partiton in question.  Of course I do wish to do this as these partitons (under a different operating environment show as valid NTFS with many hunderds of giga bytes of data/content in these partitons), the cloning process alone for these 2TB HDDs is anywhere form 7 to 16 hours each.

Answers that are needed here are:

What is causing the WinVista OS environment as installed in the HP DV9000, to only see the first partiton correctly and all other partition as either "RAW" or unformated when they really are not "RAW" or unformatted?

What is needed to correct this partiton recognition issue by the laptop hardware and/or the WinVista OS?

1st cloned 2TB (MBR) HDD; has three primary partitons ~920GB for the first partition (drv."C") holds the WinVista OS and some applications.  This partiton all is complete, functional and bootable. The Second primary partiton ~924GB (drv. "D") hold other application not closely dependant of the OS as well as some data and media.  This partition will show as "RAW" or unformated when it really is not, but infact an NTFS (MBR) partition.  The third primary partiton ~8.5GB (drv."R") is the HP Recovery environment partiton.  This partiton also appears as a "RAW" or unformated partition when it really is not, but infact an NTFS (MBR) partition.

2nd cloned 2TB (MBR) Hdd; has two primary (MBR) formated paritions ~equal in size at 931.50/.51BG respectively, this HDD when installed in the DV9000's secondary drive bay (my understanding; it is really treated as a USB port, NOT a true SATA controller interface) reports this HDDs first (931.50GB) partition (drv."E") as NTFS (MBR) and fully functions as a valid partition under the WinVistsa envronment.  The second (931.51GB) partition (drv."F") is being reported as a "RAW" (either empty/unformated or as a full -no unused space) partiton.

NOTEs:

EaseUS Partiton Master when examining the HDDs typically will infact report all partitions on both HDDs as NTFS (MBR) partiton.   However the ability to manipulate or change any parameter about these HDDs is usually truncated in some degree and will fail to make any changes to the HDDs i.e. resize/move the partiton of the HDDs,  I can, however, change the drive letter and names of the various partitions.  So far manipulating drive letters does not fix the partition recognition issue.

The BIOS of this machine is the older type and NOT a GUID type BIOS and therefore a GPT formated HDD is inappropriate for these 2TB HDDs as installed in this DV9000.  Also my understanding is that MBR formatted HDDs are sopposed to "still" work with HDDs up to 2TB, therefore MBR formatted HDDs are appropriate for my situation regaring this DV9000 and 2 TB Hdds.  If there is a flaw in mt reasoning here it needs to be pointed out with a truely workable fix.

I infact, just weeks previously, upgraded an older(real IBM) ThinkPad T43p from 500GB HDD(MBR) to 2TB HDD(MBR) without any of the issues that are being encountered, in basically the same HDD size upgrade scenario, that are being experienced with this DV9000 HDD upgrade process.

Any insight form some who really KNOWS/UNDERSTANDS all this hard drive technology and is willing to share insights/knowledge here, would have my deepest respect and gratitude.  As I have been going around the cirle with this for over two weeks now, and simply cannot find any really meaningful infomation or effective fix for this anywhere so far, on the web or elsewhere.  Please, please help!

HP Envy 17 3D not turning on. Wireless orange LED only on.

I have a HP Envy 17 and it would not power on. The problem was what TLM said to check for. The center pin of the power plug was bent to the side, I bent it back to the center and now my laptop does power on.

This is an example of how sometimes we never know what good we have done. TLM, the post you made about this power problem (not turning on) helped me fix the problem with my laptop - thank you very much!

The current power plug is a flimsy and unreliable design, which HP needs to redesign ASAP.

PLEASE Help! -- Does HP Pavilion dv7-6143cl Entertainment PC support SATA III 6

I cannot find the answer to this anywhere on the forums, HP maintenance guides, Google, etc.

I am looking to purchase  a SSD HD but cannot find anywhere... if the HP Pavilion dv7-6143cl Entertainment PC supports SATA III  6 g/sec.

I don't want to buy a SATA III drive, if my laptop cannot take full advantage of it.  I would certainly think this info should not be buried / so hard to find.

Thank you VERY MUCH.
